Mamdani Orders Bellevue Probe After Ross Falzone Killed in Chelsea Subway Push by Suspect Released Hours Earlier
Mayor Mamdani ordered NYC Health + Hospitals on Fri May 8 to conduct a "root cause analysis" of Bellevue Hospital's psychiatric evaluation and discharge protocols after Rhamell Burke, 32 — taken into custody around 3:30 PM Thu May 7 outside the 17th Precinct after acting erratically and brandishing a stick — was released from Bellevue at ~4:30 PM and ~5 hours later allegedly shoved 76-year-old retired teacher Ross Falzone down the West 18th St / Seventh Ave subway stairs, fracturing his spine and causing a traumatic brain injury. Falzone died at Bellevue overnight. Burke had been arrested 4 times in the 3 months prior, including for assaulting a Port Authority officer Feb 2. The state DOH agreed to send officials on-site immediately for a parallel review. Tests Mamdani's campaign-trail "root causes of crime" framing against the optics of a public-safety failure on Day 130.
