Mamdani Launches Office of Deed Theft Prevention, Names Peter White Director

On April 24 Mayor Mamdani announced the creation of the Office of Deed Theft Prevention and a 60-day pause on tax-lien sales. On April 28 the administration named Peter White as the office's first director. The office centralizes title-theft investigation, education, and victim navigation across HPD, DOF, and DCWP — historically a fragmented response — and works alongside the AG's Real Estate Enforcement Unit. The 60-day tax-lien pause continues to apply during stand-up. Reform advocates have praised the move; bondholders are watching for clarity on whether the pause is one-time or annual.
