Mayor Mamdani and Gov. Hochul on Sun Jun 7 briefed New Yorkers on citywide preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with five matches at MetLife (Jun 13, 16, 22, 25, 27, 30 and Jul 5 plus Jul 19 final). Each match day will be declared a Gridlock Alert Day. The Midtown plan: two eastern lanes of Sixth Ave become bus-only 42nd to 59th, existing Fifth Ave bus lanes extended, W 40th and W 41st partially bus-only blocks, 33rd Street closed Sixth–Eighth, 32nd Street closed Sixth–Seventh, restricted Midtown truck deliveries around match windows. Launched a Summer Emergency Notification Service for World Cup. Mamdani encouraged park-at-home, bike, subway, walk.
