Archila / Iran UN Meeting Scrapped — State Dept Blocks Mamdani International-Affairs Chief From Meeting Iravani

Reported Thu Jul 9 / Fri Jul 10: Ana María Archila, Commissioner of Mamdani's Office of International Affairs, was scheduled to meet with Iran's Permanent Representative to the UN Amir-Saeid Iravani on Tue Jul 7 (some accounts Jul 8). The State Department — not informed in advance — intervened, met with the Mamdani administration to clarify what federal officials called "acceptable conduct" for a municipal foreign-affairs office, and the meeting was cancelled. Archila was reprimanded and directed to cancel. Mamdani statement: "That meeting did not take place, it will not take place and I did not know about it until there was a press inquiry regarding it." Marks the second known federal intervention in weeks over Mamdani-administration contacts with foreign leaders. Amplifies pre-existing questions about the scope + oversight of Mamdani's new-in-2026 Office of International Affairs.
