E-Moto Retailer Crackdown
After 17-year-old Gabriel Nacato was killed on Chambers St July 29 riding an Amazon-purchased Deepower e-moto that exceeded NYC's 25 mph / 750 W legal limits, Mayor Mamdani sent cease-and-desist orders (Aug 5) to 42+ online retailers — Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Wayfair, Temu, Segway and Deepower among them — giving them until Aug 18 to stop shipping prohibited devices into the five boroughs or face up to $2,000 per sale. Council Speaker Menin's parallel 17-bill package (Aug 4, hearing Sept 30) would go further: banning currently-legal faster e-bikes and forcing delivery-app data disclosure. Mamdani declined to endorse mandatory rider registration, saying it would not improve safety and would burden immigrant delivery workers.
